First Aid & CPR Panama

In health care, keeping skills current protects the public. For health staff, mastering CPR and basic life support is part of professional currency; for support staff and caregivers, it is a requirement of the role. Here is what is expected for your role — and how recognized, up-to-date, documented training meets it.

Health professionals: continuing education and up-to-date skills

In Panama, the practice of the health professions is coordinated through the Technical Health Council (Consejo Técnico de Salud, MINSA) and the Interinstitutional Councils for certification of health professionals. A periodic recertification of a voluntary nature exists, established by the Ley de Recertificación.

Each professional college sets its standards and its continuing-education credit hours per discipline; keeping current the ability to initiate resuscitation manoeuvres and respond in an emergency is part of the duty of care, and CPR and basic life support training can count within those credit hours.

Recertification in Panama is voluntary and periodic (Ley de Recertificación): there is no mandatory nationwide hours standard; instead each professional college sets its continuing-education credit hours per discipline, within which CPR and basic life support can count.

The requirement is met by any recognized continuing-education activity on an eligible topic. CPR/AED, ACLS (advanced cardiovascular life support) and PALS are among the eligible activities; other topics also qualify (for example safe prescribing, suicide prevention or violence prevention). A single course therefore both meets the obligation and counts toward your hours — provided you keep the proof.

How training becomes recognized

Not all activities are equal. For continuing education to be recognized by a professional order, it must meet specific criteria:

  • the instructor’s competence;
  • the relevance and quality of the content;
  • the training framework;
  • the quality of the material provided;
  • mechanisms to monitor and assess participation.

In Panama, the professional colleges, within the framework of the Ley de Recertificación and the Interinstitutional Councils, are the bodies that set and apply the criteria for recognizing continuing-education credit hours. Our training is designed to meet these criteria.

Support and care staff: a certificate required to work

A CPR and first-aid course does not replace occupational training — it is added to it. To work with vulnerable people, a valid first-aid certificate is often required in addition to your professional training.

For the elder-caregiver role, the position requires an adult first-aid and CPR certification, usually within a training program of about 50 hours that includes basic life support and geriatric education. Alongside occupational training, a recognized standalone first-aid and CPR certificate meets that requirement and must be renewed.

Attestation, certificate and invoice: proof your training is recognized

On successful completion, you receive:

  • an official attestation;
  • a certificate of completion;
  • a detailed invoice;
  • online access to your documents for as long as your certification remains valid.

These documents are the proof to present to your professional order to credit your hours, or to your employer to demonstrate your compliance.
